The UK currently has a severe housing shortage…and at the same time many empty offices, banks, many other commercial spaces and light industrial units. If the redundant commercial space in the country was utilised we could build more than enough homes to fill the shortfall.
Working patterns have changed since the COVID pandemic with many employees now working from home. Businesses are no longer requiring such large, expensive offices to house the workforce, so in many cases are moving to smaller, flexible work spaces.
The reuse of town centre property will have the knock-on effect of helping regenerate urban areas. Once-empty commercial buildings, when given a new lease of life as smart new residential units, will house people who will use local restaurants, coffee shops and independent retailers.
